Friends of the Derby Public Library will host "Kansas Legends and Folktales," a presentation and discussion by Jim Hoy, at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 12 in the Community Room.

Members of the public are invited to attend this free program. A short business meeting will precede the presentation.

Most Kansans are familiar with the stories of grasshoppers so big that cowboys could ride them, or summers so hot that corn popped in the field. Kansas is a place of big skies and tall tales, but these exaggerated narratives help us understand the character of our state and its people. This presentation will explore some of the many legends and folktales from around the state, and what they say about the communities that keep these stories alive.

“Kansas Legends and Folktales” is part of Humanities Kansas's Movement of Ideas Speakers Bureau, featuring presentations and workshops designed to share stories that inspire, spark conversations that inform, and generate insights that strengthen civic engagement.
